#Moodle 2.5 Badges for Staff Development #gamification

I imagine that quite a few people reading this post will have come across the concept of badges, along with ‘gamification’.  Moodle 2.5 was the first Moodle version to include the ability to upload images of badges (or mini-certificates) that students can earn and show to friends or potential employers via social networking.  The beauty of this system is that badges can be earned from many different sources, from the most traditional to the most informal.

However, it is also possible to use one of the Moodle badges features, that of expiration, to manage essential staff development activities.  By setting an expiry date or a limited ‘lifetime’ on a badge it is possible to easily manage health and safety or other training that needs refreshing regularly.  It is then easy for staff and their managers to see if safeguarding, health and safety etc need updating.

If you are interested in using badges, but don’t have any appropriate images, look at this post on making free badges online.
