Compare and Contrast

This is an exercise for intermediate and up EAP students. It gives an example of a very short compare and contrast essay. It has very simple but clear topic sentences and a clear thesis statement. The exercises can be completed in any order, but the idea is that in addition to seeing a model text, they also have to do some level of cognitive processing on it.

The Western style of education has been gaining popularity over 1)_________ last decade. Instructions. Print this off and cut it into sentence strips. Give them out to groups of students and ask them to put it into order. Obviously my order is c,f,i,a,d,b,e,j,g,h,m,l,k. However, you may find one or more other possibilities.

h) However, many students think that it is worth paying the extra money as the American universities have a better reputation.

m) Furthermore, as the USA has a much larger population there are a wider range of institutions to choose from.

l) To sum up, America offers more choice and a higher reputation, but at a higher cost.

k) Australia offers the same quality, but is cheaper if you can find the course that you want.
